DOE selects Arcanum for $50 million in funding to advance commercial-scale U.S. production of battery-grade ethylene carbonate.
HOUSTON, TX, UNITED STATES, August 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Arcanum Ventures, LLC has been selected to receive $50 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation toward the development and construction of a commercial-scale U.S. facility for the production of battery-grade ethylene carbonate. The selection is subject to award negotiations with the Department of Energy.
Building on Arcanum’s extensive experience in the chemicals industry, the facility will deploy commercially proven chemical-processing technology to convert ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide into high-purity ethylene carbonate, a critical solvent used in lithium-ion battery electrolytes.
The project is expected to be integrated with existing domestic chemical manufacturing infrastructure and co-located with facilities that can provide precursor materials, utilities, and supporting services. This approach is intended to leverage the scale and efficiency of the existing U.S. chemical industry while establishing a reliable domestic source of a critical material currently supplied primarily through imports.
“Ethylene carbonate is a foundational material for conventional lithium-ion battery electrolytes, yet the U.S. currently relies almost entirely on imported supply,” said Pat Geer, Chief Commercial Officer of Arcanum and Project Lead. “This project is designed to meet growing domestic demand by leveraging the capabilities and cost advantages of the U.S. chemical industry, establishing a reliable and competitive domestic source for battery-grade ethylene carbonate.”
“This selection is an important recognition of Arcanum’s capabilities and our approach to developing new chemical manufacturing infrastructure,” said Matt Bogun, Chief Executive Officer of Arcanum. “We see significant opportunities to leverage the strength of the existing U.S. chemical industry to build competitive domestic supply chains for materials that are increasingly important to the U.S. economy.”
